Why you miss calendar alerts on iPhone

Updated October 8, 2026

A calendar alert is a notification: one sound, a banner, and it is not played again. Silent mode, a Focus, a low volume or a watch on your wrist is all it takes to hear nothing at all. Here is what to check, and what an alarm changes.

A notification is designed to be discreet

When the Calendar app, Google Calendar or any other calendar app warns you, it sends a notification. Your iPhone plays a sound once, shows a banner for a moment, then files the alert away in Notification Center. It doesn't play it again.

If you are on a call, in a meeting or in another room at that moment, the alert is gone. A notification is designed not to disturb you. For an appointment, you need the opposite.

Seven things to check

1. Your iPhone is in silent mode

In silent mode, your iPhone vibrates for alerts instead of ringing. You turn it on with the switch on the side, or with the Action button on recent models, sometimes without noticing. Only alarms get through. This is covered in detail in How to make your iPhone ring for an appointment, even in silent mode.

2. A Focus is on

Do Not Disturb, Work, Sleep: a Focus hides notifications, except from the people and apps you have allowed. It can turn on by itself, at a set time, in a place or when you open an app. Look for the icon at the top of the Lock Screen. To let your calendar through: Settings, then Focus, then the Focus in question, then Apps.

3. The alert volume is all the way down

By default, alerts follow the ringer volume. If "Change with Buttons" is on, the volume buttons also lower the ringer, and an alert can become inaudible. Check the slider in Settings, then Sounds & Haptics. You can also give alerts their own volume by turning off "Use Ringer Volume" under "Alerts & System Sounds".

4. The alert has no sound

Two settings to look at. In Settings, then Notifications, then Calendar: "Allow Notifications" must be on, and so must Sounds. In Settings, then Sounds & Haptics, tap "Calendar Alerts" and make sure a sound is selected.

5. The alert went into the scheduled summary

The scheduled summary bundles notifications from some apps and delivers them at set times. If Calendar is one of them, your 2pm alert arrives with the 6pm summary. In Settings, then Notifications, then Scheduled Summary, remove Calendar. Or, in the app's notification settings, under Notification Delivery, choose "Deliver Immediately".

6. Your Apple Watch got it instead

According to Apple, a notification appears on your Apple Watch or on your iPhone, never on both. When your iPhone is locked, the watch gets it, unless the watch is locked too. The watch vibrates, and the iPhone does not ring.

7. The event has no alert

An event without an alert doesn't warn you. In Calendar, tap the event, then Edit, then Alert, and pick a time, for example "5 minutes before". Check this for invitations you receive and events from other calendars too: they don't always come with an alert.

What an alarm changes

An alarm doesn't play by the same rules. It rings in silent mode and with a Focus on, like the alarm clock in the Clock app. It shows up on the Lock Screen and waits for you to stop it or snooze it. It does not disappear into Notification Center.

Tellendar is a calendar app for iPhone that only warns you with alarms. Each appointment can have one or several, and they are real iOS alarms. Tellendar never sends a plain notification as a reminder.

A birthday card for Saturday, October 17, with three alarms: one week before at 18:00, the day before at 20:00, and at 09:00.
One appointment with several alarms.
  1. Install Tellendar and allow alarms when the app asks.
  2. Type or dictate your appointment and its alarm, for example: "Dentist Thursday at 3pm with an alarm 1 hour before".
  3. Tellendar creates the event and the alarm. If you didn't ask for an alarm, the app suggests one and lets you decide.

When the alarm rings, you stop it, or tap "Snooze 10 min" to have it ring again later. If you connect Google Calendar, you can add alarms to the events already in it.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my iPhone make a sound for a Calendar event?

Because the alert is a notification. Silent mode, a Focus, a low volume, the scheduled summary or an Apple Watch is enough to keep it quiet. Check those settings one by one. For an appointment that matters, use an alarm instead.

Can a Calendar alert ring more than once?

No. A notification plays its sound once. In Tellendar, you can put several alarms on the same appointment, the day before and one hour before for example, and snooze each one for ten minutes when it rings.

What about Google Calendar?

Same rules: Google Calendar reminders on iPhone are notifications, subject to silent mode and Focus modes. Tellendar can add alarms to the events in your Google calendar.

Do Tellendar alarms get through Focus modes?

Yes. They are iOS alarms, like the ones in the Clock app. They ring in silent mode and with Do Not Disturb on, even when the app is closed.
